Reading makes you healthy! (an infographic)

We love reading books, and we’re guessing you do too. However, did you know that reading helps us live longer, stay sharper, be happier, as well as have more friends too?

Reading fiction has been shown to increase empathy and theory of mind, and these qualities can enhance your ability to make more meaningful social connections. Having a good social network is associated with better health and a longer life. In fact, loneliness and social isolation are factors associated with early death. Dementia and Alzheimer’s can also be staved off by engaging in mental activities such as reading.

Researchers studied the reading habits of 3635 people, and followed up with them 12 years later. They found that people who read books for 3.5 hours or more per week were 23% less likely to die than those who did not read books at all. Even more interesting is that book reading had a higher survival advantage over reading newspapers and magazines.

Global English Editing have created this fascinating infographic which shows us how incredibly healthy reading is for us. Of course, we didn’t need to know that reading is good for us because we would read on anyway. This is just the icing on the cake!

Wow, that’s an awesome infographic! I knew some of these, but I didn’t realize all the benefits reading could have. Think hubby would totally buy these benefits late at night when he’s trying to go to bed and I want just one more chapter? xD Yeah, I guess probably not … but it never hurts to try. 😉
