I spent over an hour creating a new blog background for Fictionophile.
My husband strolled by my desk and asked what I was doing. I explained.
He completely burst my bubble when he stated: “Why waste your time doing that?
Most people won’t even see your background because they read blogs on their phones or tablets.”
GASP!!!! Is this true????
Here is my new wallpaper in case you can’t see it…
I tried to incorporate some of my favourite book titles, the flags of my province and country, and of course, my name and the name of my blog.
I can’t wait to hear what you all have to say on the subject.
Do YOU have a background image on YOUR blog? Why? or Why not?
I post all my blog stories using my phone…..and designed my entire theme using the phone view on the dashboard.

Interesting… I wish everyone would test how their blog looks via computer, tablet, and phone. I did this only recently and was appalled at how my blog looked the smaller devices.

Lovely background! My page is pretty simple, but that is mostly because I’m both lazy and don’t have the time. While I love technology, there are certain things I do only on my laptop, and anything related to blogging is one of them. Because I like to comment, but I don’t like to type on my phone. So I get the full benefit of your efforts. 😀

Absolutely Love the new background! Stunning! I don’t have a background mainly because I feel like I would get bored with it, but I have thought about it!

I never get bored with my background as I change it quite frequently. Sometimes it is just seasonal changes, sometimes complete overhauls like this time. I’m so glad you like the results of my efforts Holly. ♥

Pretty funny, Lynne. Yes, also a subject I wrote about some time ago after I read an article that stated most algorithms were changing to favor mobile devices. Well, I’ve certainly noted the change in the algorithms alright since I no longer get notifications of posts and must also go to my WP reader to catch up! However, having said that, I do read other blogs on my computer (old as it is), and love your backgrounds. Don’t let hubby rain on your parade. And no, guess my freebie template doesn’t do backgrounds, tho I’d like to have one too. (all that white space…)

I have a ‘freebie’ WordPress template too but in allows you to customize it. (It is the Twenty Ten theme)

I tend to browse post on my phone. But I get on the computer to do my composing and interacting with blogs. I find it easier. That said, I tend to use the wordpress reader so I don’t see the blogs in all their glory. When I do remember to follow the link to the actual blog site (not just the reader) then yeah the design plays a major part of whether or not I follow. I love the wallpaper you made.

Thanks Alex. I often use the WP reader as well, though I do often click out to the actual site. More often, I click on other book blogs via my Blogroll as you see it on my sidebar. Like you, I interact with other bloggers via my computer.

I don’t have a background and to be honest I can’t tell you why. Maybe someday I’ll make one.
I am one of those people who reads blog posts on my phone and/or tablet when I am home or on the road or generally while waiting somewhere. I use the computer/laptop when I am at work because I have the site open or when I just finished drafting posts and I want to see my feed.

I have a very simple background on my blog. The reason I chose this is because I find it easier to read. I look at blogs mainly on my computer, again, because the posts are easier to read on a bigger screen.

Simple is good. I guess I went overboard. I wanted it to be personal so incorporated some of my favourite books, my blog’s name, and the flags of where I live.
I prefer reading blogs on my computer too. ♥️

That is really a good and valid point. Most of the times I do read the blogs I follow on my smartphone and it annoys me when the person did not select a mobile friendly theme. Luckily WordPress has a big option of those, I struggle more with blogs on blogspot.
I believe the background and theme needs to be a light lighter for mobile devices, but it pays off to have something related to the content and customized, as it makes it more personal and easily identifiable.
That being said, I like your background picture 🙂

First off: I really like the new background, I think it’s very well laid out. Secondly, of course you can see that background on other devices because WordPress optimizes your blog for all devices 🙂

Sadly that is not the case. WordPress does optimize blogs for all devices but ONLY for the content and sidebar. On my tablet my wallpaper is NOT visible.
Thanks for your kind words about my attempt at wallpaper creation.

I read blogs in WordPress or Feedly apps and I don’t see their backgrounds. I find font important as readability matters when I’m on a go. I mostly read on my tablet / phone but even when I’m on my pc, I stick to the apps and hardly ever visit sites.
Your background looks lovely. I would still go ahead with it. 😊👏

I have a plain background but a different colour from the foreground. I chose that theme because I think it makes my various widgets stand out. But what I like is seeing the variety of different looks around the blogosphere – they’re an expression of the blogger’s personality, I think.

I tend to use my laptop the most but will check in on my phone or tablet if I am out and about, just depends on what I’m doing. The background looks lovely, I do think that I’m more drawn to blogs with nice aesthetics but at the end of the day if I don’t find the content interesting then it won’t matter 😊

I love your new background. I have not really considered backgrounds, but I do look at them. I don’t choose a blog to follow based on backgrounds, but if they are visually appealing, they are more apt to catch my eye. I read on all three, but if I want respond or really take my time, I use my laptop.

I have a blog background, but it’s just a repeated pattern as you can’t really see it on my style blog – I’m probably 60 / 40 laptop and phone, respecively. But when on laptop I often read and comment on blogs via wordpress reader, so maybe it’s only 20 out of the 60 % (whilst on laptop) where I actually visit the blogs… i wouldn’t have seen your pic is you hadn’t of shared it. It’s lovely though!

70% of the blog reading is done on laptop. it’s convenient to open links on new tab and reading is easy and of course i can see whole blog including widgets on side bars or bottom.
i do have a background but it’s not relevant. half the reason is because of main blog picture/banner of bird and nature along with books and cup (it matches that first pic and i like birds nature theme), and other reason is it looks pretty. i appreciate visual appeal along with good content.
