Teaser Tuesday – September 7, 2021 #NewBook #TeaserTuesday @karen_odden #DownADarkRiver @crookedlanebks #NetGalley

My Tuesday post where I’ll ‘tease‘ you with the cover, blurb, and first paragraph of one of the advanced reader’s copies from my own TBR.

This book is a title I downloaded from NetGalley.

Today, Tuesday September 7, 2021 I want to introduce one of the ARCs on my TBR.

This book will be published November 9, 2021

Publisher: Crooked Lane Books

ISBN: 9781643858692 – ASIN: B08WCP3MP4 –  336 pages

1)  The mixture of historical fiction and police procedural.

2) The London, England setting and time period.

3)  The protagonist, Michael Corravan sounds like an interesting character.

4) I’ve never read anything by this author and I’m eager to try her work.

London – April 1878

Most of us Yard men would say that over time we develop an extra sense for danger close at hand. This instinct emerges early on, when a man is still new to a uniformed division, wearing a scratchy blue coat with shoulders a few inches wider than his own, and he’s feeling his way for the first time down a shadowed alley, truncheon in hand, braced for whatever skulks around the corner.

Have you ever read anything by this author?

Is this a title that you would consider adding to your TBR pile?

Why, or why not?

Let me know in the comments.

I love the blurb and the first paragraph is definitely one that hooked me. I have not read this author before, but this sounds really good. I hope you read it soon, so I can hear what you think, Lynne.

P.s. I should also have said this book was a departure from my previous 3. Like this one, they were all set in 1870s London but they each had a different young women protagonist–the daughter of an earl, a pianist, a painter–who is drawn into a mystery because of a threat to or death of someone she loves. In this way, they’re rather like Mary Stewart, if you ever read those books (I grew up reading them in my grandmother’s library). In this book, I’ve switched to a male protagonist … a former thief and boxer, which was very different but a ton of fun.

Good morning, Lynne! I’m so gratified you chose my book for a #teaser. I hope you enjoy it. The origins of the book began around 2013, with two separate strands of thought … one was a story I read years ago about injustice and the law that got me thinking about how revenge is more complicated sometimes than just “an eye for an eye” because sometimes it is a plea to be heard in what feels like an uncaring world; the second was thinking about how our childhoods shape certain beliefs … and for my Michael Corravan who grew up thieving and bare-knuckles boxing in Whitechapel, believing strength and decisiveness in action were the virtues that got him love and appreciation (and kept him alive), vulnerability and empathy sort of went by the wayside. It’s up to his friend, the sensitive novelist Belinda Gale, to remind him that sometimes empathy can be our greatest strength. I’ll be interested to hear what you think of it. 🙂 Have a great Tuesday, and thanks again!
