In the past month I’ve read NINE titles.
I enjoyed every one of them, some more than others of course.
This is definitely not an uplifting story. It is a tale of hardship, of poverty, injustice, and perseverance. Of living an austere life; of opportunities missed, and of pride. The tale is told with vivid imagery, a few of which scenes will remain with me for a very long time.
AND TWO WORTHY RUNNER-UPS:
Given that the plot is set during the week before Christmas, it is an excellent read to remind us of just how privileged and well off we are. It particularly relays the message that doing the ‘right’ thing is not always easy. After reading this novella, I am very eager to read some of this author’s longer fiction. This gem of a little book gets an easy five stars from me.
An accomplished debut novel that deserves much acclaim. The Girl in the Maze explores the complex relationship and challenges involved in both mothering and being mothered. It is brutal in its honesty, and quite able to rip out your heart.
My review of “Girl In The Maze” will be posted within the next few days.
I feel very lucky to have access to so many wonderful books and hope that you too had a great reading month. Wishing you all health and happiness for 2022. ♥
